How Shoku handles your family's data
Effective September 19, 2026
The short version
- Who sees it
- You and the family members you invite
- Do we sell data
- Never
- Ads
- None — no ad networks, no ad tracking
- Delete anytime
- In-app, Settings → Delete account permanently
1 What we collect
Shoku is a shared household app, so most of what it stores is the kitchen information you and your family put into it. Here's exactly what that includes:
| Category | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Email, name, password (or Google sign-in identity) | Sign you in, identify you to your family |
| Household data | Pantry items, shopping lists, recipes, meal plans | The core of what the app does |
| Family membership | Who's in your household, invite codes, roles | Control who can see and edit shared data |
| Usage events | Actions like "recipe saved" or "item added", tied to your account, not to ad identifiers | Understand what's useful, fix what isn't |
| Device preference | Whether App Lock (Face ID / fingerprint) is turned on | Remember your setting |
Biometric unlock happens entirely on your device through iOS or Android's own Face ID / Touch ID / fingerprint system. Shoku never receives, transmits, or stores your actual biometric data — only the on/off preference.
2 AI recipe suggestions
When you tap "What can I cook tonight?", the names of your pantry items are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate recipe ideas. Recipe URLs you paste to import are fetched server-side to pull out the ingredients and steps. Neither is used to identify you personally beyond generating that one response, and we don't build advertising profiles from it.
3 Who we share it with
- Your family members — anyone you invite into your household sees the pantry, shopping list, recipes, and meal plans you share.
- Supabase — our database, authentication, and file-storage provider. They host the data; they don't use it for anything of their own.
- PostHog — our analytics provider, for the usage events described above.
- Anthropic — processes pantry item names to generate AI recipe suggestions, per §2.
We don't sell data to anyone, and we don't work with advertising or data-broker networks.
4 How long we keep it
Your data stays until you remove it. Deleting a pantry item, recipe, or list entry removes it immediately. Deleting your account (Settings → Delete account permanently) removes your login and any household where you're the only member, along with that household's pantry, shopping list, recipes, and meal plans. If you leave a shared household instead, its data stays intact for the family members remaining in it.
5 Security
Data in transit is encrypted (TLS). Your session is stored in your device's secure hardware-backed keychain, never in plain text. Database access is scoped with row-level security, so a request can only ever reach data belonging to a household you're actually a member of.
6 Children
Shoku is operated by adults planning meals for their household — it isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect account data from them.
7 Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top and, for material changes, let you know in the app.
